Aswarm grew from the work of artist Thor McIntyre-Burnie, as more complex and collaborative projects  arose. Aswarm at first offered an umbrella org and and active intention to move away from the notion of contemporary artist as brand, and then evolved into an incorporated limited company. So when digging into the roots of Aswarm the archive overlaps with and draws from Thor’s own work both as an artist & sound designer. Practicing as an artist since 1997, Thor has pursued a line of work that exists largely outside gallery contexts, preferring to works in public and site specific spaces, where the art acts as intervention and tool to re-explore our environment.

It is whilst studying Fine Art that Thor developed a fascination for sound. This passion grew from am in depth and inquisitive study of television both as a medium/phenomenon and as a sculptural object to pull apart:

“Dissecting sound from its complicit partner of the screen I found sound partnered instead with objects, spaces and places, transforming how they functioned. Thrilled by this discovery I combined it with a passion for architectural, immersive and public space, which lead to a career exploring how sound can subtly change how we utilise relate and ultimately play with the world around us. “

” I hesitate to call my self a sound artist, as for me sound is always a major part of my work, but sculpture, light, AV, interactive technology, colour, form, concept and performance are all important elements  in my work –  for sound does not exist in a vacuum.”

Over the years Thor also developed an established practice as a Sound Designer specialising in site-specific and outdoor performance for theatre, dance, pyrotechnics & fire, and Son et lumière.  His unique experience with spatial, multi-channel, multi-site and interactive sound especially in the outdoor arts & site responsive sector has lead to him being a leader in this peculiar field ‘between’ stage & place.

His understanding of sound as a playful tool has also lead to some award winning work  in interactive-concept-sound design for museums and public engagement projects.
