Orchitecture

A symphony to walk within

Like an exploded diagram of an engine, the Orchestra is dispersed across the many interconnecting rooms of a building, synchronised via radio link and CCTV feed of the conductor, they perform a live site-specific symphony to walk within.

Walking within this live orchestra, each individual audience member navigates a
sonic pathway through the symphony via a series of intimate encounters with musicians.

Exploring Architecture through the Orchestra and the Orchestra through Architecture

- Like Quantum physicists exploring the Uncertainty Principle, how this symphony is perceived is determined by how people choose to navigate in time & space, between 1-2-1 encounters and finding sweet spots between musicians and through the architecture, the score unfolds around you.

It was amazing!

Orchitecture is a site specific sound installation, which transforms the orchestral experience into an act of architectural exploration!

Conceived by Thor McIntyre-Burnie and developed via a long running collaboration with New London Orchestra and Architect Ayssar Arida

COMING SOON - Orchitecture V4 - Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton, with Chineke! Orchestra

We're delighted to announce our 4th rendition of Orchitecture will be happening on Saturday 8th March 2025, exploding the fabulous Chineke! Orchestra around Lambeth Town Hall, in the heart of Brixton, London.

Developed in partnership with Lambeth Council in collaboration with Chineke! Foundation —Europe’s leading majority Black and ethnically diverse orchestra— and Orbital Sound, this transformative performance invites audiences to step inside Lambeth Town Hall like never before, as Orchitecture transforms the building’s historic Edwardian architecture into a living, breathing symphony !

Chineke! Foundation will perform Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Othello Suite, conducted by Lambeth resident Enyi Okpara. This dynamic piece will be played in cycles throughout the event.

By bringing Othello into this civic space, Orchitecture explores racial representation in classical music and public spaces, reflecting Lambeth’s history of activism and resilience.

An an era where Lago like Social influences draw on fears that have lingered on in sectors of English society from Shakespeare's time and on, stirring up racial hatred on X (Twitter), it feels all the more important in 2025 to re-evaluate and re-affirm who our civic spaces serve and transform them into places to celebrate the vibrant diversity and innovative culture that makes our city so great.

Lambeth Town Hall sits in the heart of Brixton, a hub of Black British Culture and this version of Orchitecture will offer a temporary transformation of the building, placing the Conductor Enyi Okra in the speakers chair, conducting the council chamber! - His orchestra dispersed all around the building, they will collectively perform as an orchestral whole, together creating something quite incredible - a symphony to walk within.!

As an allegory to the process of collective governorship and democracy and the amazing potential of collective action, we have long wanted to install this concept in a council hub and so we're so excited about the many layers this next version brings into play.

The performance unites professional musicians from Chineke! Foundation with the Chineke! Junior Orchestra and young talent from Lambeth Music Service. - So not only do audiences discover the wonders of the orchestra in action. right up close and personal,  they also get to witness the beautiful process of fostering mentorship and community connection in action too!

This event is supported through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund  (UKSPF).

And we can't Waite!
